A Teacher Was First
Anna Edson Taylor, a teacher, was the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She was 63 years old and said she hoped the Oct. 24, 1901, stunt would bring her fame and fortune. After the 18-minute plunge, she traveled the country, collecting fees for signatures, memorabilia and speaking engagements.
