Chrome Yellow
Yellow school buses transport children to school in practically every U.S. community. But the buses weren’t always yellow. Frank W. Cyr brought together education officials and transportation industry representatives in 1939 to set school bus standards, including a consistent color. They decided on a shade that was later named “National School Bus Chrome Yellow.” The conference picked what they deemed the safest color because it was easy to see in the light of early morning and late afternoon.
