Soft Sponges

Although it is estimated that there are up to 10,000 sponge species worldwide, only about six of them are suitable for commercial use. That’s because most of these underwater creatures have relatively rigid skeletons made up of calcium carbonate and silica instead of the softer spongin. In ancient Rome, these soft sponges were often placed on the end of a stick and used as a form of toilet paper.
