Annoyed Chef

America’s potato chip craze started with an annoyed chef in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. In 1853, an unnamed diner at Moon’s Lake House sent his fried potatoes back to the kitchen because they were not crispy enough. The chef, George Crum, furious with the criticism, made paper-thin potato slices and added plenty of salt before frying. It is said he intended to ruin the customer’s dinner. Instead, Crum created a hit.
