Gladiator Food

Barley has long been a useful grain. In ancient Athens, this cereal was the special food of the gladiators, who were sometimes called hordearii or barley-eaters. And in England, the barleycorn was used to measure shoe sizes. A child’s size-13 shoe measured 13 barleycorns in length or about 4-1/3 inches.
