Cooked Garbage Only
The world’s first municipal dump was established in 500 B.C. at Athens. Local laws required that waste be dumped at least a mile from the city. Over the years, improvements were made in public disposal systems, including the introduction of “piggeries” in 1900. Pigs ate fresh and cooked garbage, but many contracted vesicular exanthema in the 1950s, and thousands had to be slaughtered. The resulting law required that all garbage fed to pigs be cooked first.
