The Color of Stop

From 1923 to 1954, all stop signs were yellow with black lettering. The Bureau of Public Roads changed the signs to red with a white border and white lettering in 1954 because reflectorized, red sheeting was less likely than the yellow backgrounds to fade over time.

hat sign is at Valentine Dam Road and Sullivan County Road 172 west of the
Village of Wurtsboro NY. Sullivan County 172 is an old alignment of NY
17-This is a state sign. It's the only yellow STOP sign I've seen anywhere on
a public road. It was reflective at one time-The sheeting is in an advanced
state of deterioration, and the sign will likely be down to bare metal and
the vinyl lettering in a few years time-something that commonly happens with
state route markers. The sign is the last generation of yellow STOP signs,
since fully reflective sheeting came into use in the mid 50's.. Sullivan
county has a lot of signs of similar vintage; mostly curve signs.

Thanks so much for the background on the photo. Always good to hear from an interested reader (especially when you can add a bit of detail to the story).
